Cowboy, western and first rodeo birthday party ideas
Games, food, decorations and a simple schedule for cowboy, cowgirl, "my first rodeo" and western birthday parties, with a mechanical bull as the main event.
Western parties are some of the easiest themes to pull off, and in Alabama they come naturally. Below are ideas for every age, from "My First Rodeo" first birthdays to adult western birthdays and cowgirl bachelorette parties, plus how a mechanical bull fits into the day.

My First Rodeo (first birthday)
The guest of honor is probably too young to ride, since riders start at age 2, so build the party around photos and the guests who can ride. Set up a hay bale photo spot with a small hat and bandana, keep the schedule to two hours, and let siblings, cousins and parents take turns on the bull. Cowhide-print cakes and "My First Rodeo" banners are easy to find.
Cowboy and cowgirl parties for ages 2 to 10
Kids love a theme they can dress for. Ask guests to wear boots, hats or bandanas, and give each child a toy badge as they arrive. Keep turns short and let the bull be the main event, with Cole choosing a gentle speed for younger riders and a faster one for kids who ask.
Rodeo party games
- Lasso toss: a rope loop and a hay bale or stuffed steer
- Stick-horse races: a short course with cones as barrels
- Bandana scavenger hunt: hide western items around the yard or hall
- Gold panning: a tub of sand with painted rocks
- "Hold on for eight seconds": the mechanical bull challenge
Food and decorations
- Food: barbecue sliders, cornbread, chili cups, trail mix, sweet tea or lemonade, and a "chuck wagon" snack table
- Cake: cowhide print, boots, a horseshoe or a "Yeehaw" sheet cake
- Decorations: hay bales, bandana napkins, lanterns, wooden crates and "WANTED" posters with the birthday kid’s photo
- Music: classic and modern country playlists
How the bull fits the schedule
- Cole sets up before guests arrive, and the kids settle in with a snack.
- Start the bull with younger riders at a slow, gentle speed, then step up the speed for older kids.
- Break for games and cake, then end with a last round for anyone who wants another turn.
Mechanical bull riding is not risk-free, and we don’t pretend it is. Here is how we run kids’ rides: Cole operates the bull himself and never leaves it unattended, the bull sits inside a padded inflatable landing area, every rider’s waiver is signed (by a parent or guardian for anyone under 18), and Cole matches the speed to each child’s age and ability, starting with a slow, gentle spin for little ones. Riding is always optional, and a parent who isn’t comfortable with a child riding can simply say so.
Adult western birthdays and Yeehaw parties
For 21st, 30th, 40th and beyond, a mechanical bull plus a country playlist and a barbecue spread makes a ready-made party. Add a longest-rider contest to turn the crowd into a cheering section. Adults, parents and grandparents ride too, and a 91-year-old once made it past 8 seconds.
Western bachelorette themes
Popular cowgirl bachelorette themes include "Last Rodeo," "Save a Horse, Ride a Bull" and "Boots and Bubbly." Pair boots and hats with a mechanical bull for photos, then keep drinks and snacks nearby. We bring the bull to private properties, rental houses and event spaces; see weddings and bachelorette parties for details.

Frequently asked questions
How do I plan a my first rodeo birthday party?
Pick a western color palette, set up hay bales or bandana decorations, add a few easy rodeo games, and plan a cake moment. For a first birthday the guest of honor is usually too young to ride, so the bull is for siblings, cousins and the grown-ups, while the birthday baby gets a photo on a hay bale.
Can a mechanical bull be part of a cowboy or cowgirl party?
Yes. The bull is the centerpiece of many of our cowboy, cowgirl and rodeo parties. Cole runs it himself and sets the speed for each rider, from a slow, gentle spin for little ones to a faster ride for teens and adults.
What are good cowboy birthday party games?
Popular choices are a lasso toss at a hay bale or a stuffed steer, stick-horse races, a bandana scavenger hunt, a gold panning table and a mechanical bull ride to see who lasts the longest.
What are good cowboy party food ideas?
Barbecue sliders, cornbread, chili, trail mix, sweet tea or lemonade, and a cake decorated with cowhide or boots. A "chuck wagon" snack table suits kids and adults.
Can you bring the bull to a western bachelorette party?
Yes. Many bachelorette parties add a mechanical bull to a cowgirl or last-rodeo theme. See our weddings and bachelorette page for details.
How much does a cowboy party bull rental cost?
$250 an hour for events up to 5 hours, so a three-hour party is $750, plus $2 for each mile over 25 miles from Hanceville.
